Doing Tasting

Oh, the shame! What to do with leftover champagne.

Leftover champagne? Chug it. Okay, the end of the night is a little hazy and how it came to be that you awoke to find undrunk champagne will forever remain a mystery. What to do with the rarely forgotten fizz however, is not. Here are our 10 champagne revivers…and don't worry, the second one is chug it.

Champagne ice cubes.Leftover champagne. Stale champagne. Revive champagne. Add fizz to champagne.

1. Make champagne ice cubes.

We actually did this one ourselves (photographic evidence above) which means we can confidently say it's foolproof. Freeze the champagne in ice cube trays and use them to make tonight’s glass extra cold or drop some into orange juice to make a super refreshing bucks fizz. Add grenadine and you’ve got yourself a chilled mimosa baby. We fancied ours up with a drop of red food colouring because that's how we roll.

2. Drop a raison into the bottle to make it fizz again.

Finally a reason for the existence of raisons. Pop one down the neck of the champers and pour yourself newly sparkling glass. The science is pretty solid; the kisses of bubble pixies and raison imps create little love bubbles. It’s quantum fizzics man

3. Make champagne vinegar.

Here’s one from Martha Stewart no less; pour the champers into wide-mouthed jars and leave them uncovered and in a few weeks you’ll have champagne vinegar. A few reports online suggest covering the jars with some cheesecloth or light fabrics to avoid spider-and-fly-spiced-champagne vinegar….which actually sounds good, because it has champagne in it.

4. Jelly shots! Jelly shots! Jelly shots!

This one’s ridiculously easy and will win you serious brownie points with the girlies. Mix some instant jelly (raspberry or strawberry maybe?) with hot water as per the pack’s instructions, allow it to cool and slowly mix in the champagne. Pour it all into a bowl and patiently watch it set in the fridge for about four hours. Scratch it all up with a fork and spoon into shot glasses…stand back and bask in the glow of your triumph.

5. Champagne risotto. Cause you’re Gordon Fecking Ramsay when you’re hungover.

Okay, the last one’s allowed to be a bit of a stretch. If by some miracle you feel like cooking, this comforting savoury risotto could well be a cure. Make up risotto as normal substituting half the broth with champers. Add parmesan and top with a pouched egg. And you, my friend, are a champagne champion.

Face on you; The “perfect” eyebrows

We all know, by now, how important groomed eyebrows are. Their powers have been successfully wielded on many a suitor, whispering the words our lips dare not. So effective, this mini face lift, it's become as addictive necessary as brushing our teeth. But this is no easy technique to master. It's been a long, winding and tearful road, fraught with over zealous beauticians and drunken friends. I've gone from full bush to plucked Chicken and back again. So with what little hair I have left (so unfair, the only place we don't want to lose hair from) I want to learn how to put these puppies to good use once and for all.

There are 6 basic face shapes

Long                       Round                         Oval

Diamond                     Heart                      Square

Determine your face shape

Now this can be a little tricky but one must be broken down before being built back up again. A chrysalis becoming a butterfly, if you will. But to be on the safe side, let's begin with this mantra; Strong, magnificent woman. Strong, magnificent woman.

Start by pulling your hair back off your face and pull good. You want a wisp free canvas so that you can see every nook and cranny. Now, with no make-up on (I know), look closely in the mirror. Closer... Closer... Now scrutinise! (But please, be gentle, there's no such thing as a bad face shape. Fact! The scientists said so)

The features for each face shape to look for are;

Long face shape

♦ Forehead, cheekbones and jawline are approximately the same width

♦ Tends to have a prominent chin              ♦ Has an elongated appearance

A sleek aristocratic beauty. The goal here is to make a long face appear shorter. Apply straight, horizontal lines with low arches that stop the eye moving up and down the face too much.

♥ Who's company you're keeping; Jessica Alba and Milla Jovovich

The "perfect" brow shape for you is generally considered to be the "Flat Brow Shape"

Ø

Round face shape

♦ Face is almost as wide as it is long                       ♦ Full rounded jawline

♦ Tends to be widest at the cheeks

Ah, the most youthful of the group. To make this romantic face appear less round and a little longer, think straight sculpting lines and high arches. This has a lengthening effect.

♥ Who's company you're keeping; Charlize Theron and Mila Kunis

The "perfect" brow shape for you is generally considered to be the "High Arch Brow Shape"

Ø

Oval face shape

♦ Forehead wider than chin                                      ♦ Prominent cheekbones

♦ Face tapers to narrow/oval chin

This is considered the ideal face shape, you lucky duck! The brows play no part in making the face appear "more oval" because it already is oval. Soft arches can only but enhance what your Mama gave you.

♥ Who's company you're keeping; Julianne Moore and Carey Mulligan

The "perfect" brow shape for you is generally considered to be the "Soft Angled Shape"

Ø

Diamond face shape

♦ Typically this face is highly angular             ♦ The forehead can be short

♦ The face is widest at the temples

A rare beauty, this elegant structure is the least common face shape. It's all about the softly, softly approach here. The aim is to make the widest portion of the face less wide. Curves and arching will help achieve this.

♥ Who's company you're keeping; Reese Witherspoon and Christy Turlinton

The "perfect" brow shape for you is generally considered to be the "Curved Brow Shape"

Ø

Heart face shape

♦ Prominent cheekbones                                       ♦ Forehead wider then chin

♦ Chin tapers to a point

Think sweeping sweetness when dealing with this face shape. Create an alluring heart shape using the point of your chin as the bottom of the heart and the brows as the top of the heart. Soft, rounded and feminine are key.

♥ Who's company you're keeping; Claire Danes and Gwyneth Paltrow

The "perfect" brow shape for you is generally considered to be the "Low Arch Round Brow Shape"

Ø

Square face shape

♦ Forehead, cheekbones and jawline are at equal widths

♦ A squared jawline is the most obvious feature

Adding an aura of regality and poise to the neckline, a square jaw is a strong feature. Enhance those contours with a chiseled brow, thicker is better but keep it neat.

♥ Who's company you're keeping; Keira Knightley and Katie Holmes

The "perfect" brow shape for you is generally considered to be the "Angled or Curved Brow Shape"

Tuesday Boozeday; Easy Hot Cider Punch.

I'm running a little late with our Tuesday Boozeday recipe today because, given the week that's in it, I decided to make it myself...for photographic reasons, of course. Now isn't the time to be faffing with orange-peel swirls and salted rims so this is a rustic hot punch recipe  you can make with ingredients you'll find in any local shop. Just get it going on the hob while you're ringing in cooking dinner.

How to make Hot Cider punch. Hot cider punch recipes. homemade punch. Chritmas punch. Winter punch recipe. Hot winter cocktail.You'll need;

A litre bottle of Bulmers (you can use any cider really but Bulmers has a sense of vomit-scented nostalgia I can't resist), a bottle of Captain Morgan's (again, any spiced rum will do but I love the vanilla flavour the Captain has), a litre of orange juice, a fresh orange, some cloves and cinnamon sticks.

Hot cider punch recipe. Bulmers recipe magners recipe. winter hot punch. cider punch. apple bunch. uses for cider

If you have time, stud the orange with cloves and roast it in the oven for around half an hour, it's not crucial though. Add the cider, orange juice and cinnamon sticks, cloves and (sliced) orange to a saucepan. Simmer gently for at least half an hour then pour it into a punchbowl or jug. Add half a shot of Captain Morgan's to the cup before spooning in the steaming punch.

And you're done. Oh, and it's a week to Christmas...just in case you were looking for an excuse.

Digit switchover; upgrade your nails with these easy tutorials.

It's been a year of spectacular talon wars thanks to the likes of Rihanna, Katy Perry and Alexa Chung attempting to claw their way to the coveted position of Queen of Cuticles . If you think you're going to get away with your boring old French manicure this Christmas, you're wrong. People will point and laugh, and their nails will look bloody fabulous doing so. I spent hours on Pinterest searching out the best nail art tutorials, then I got caught up and galaxied my nails, then I got back on track and compiled this list.

They've done something they promised they'd never do again and passed through school gates...but just because they're mature students doesn't mean they behave any more grown up than last time around. My precious; Jewellery storage ideas made from everyday items.

Gollum's return to the big screen has got us thinking about our own efforts to keep our jewellery safe. Turns out the Lidl bag filled with a snake-pit of tangled chains and bracelets isn't working out too well. With a little inspiration, imagination and super glue we can turn things around. Here are our favourite jewellery organising DIYs that could lead to us actually finding our earrings when we need them. Do they high-five in Middle Earth?

Give beans a chance; 3 yummy recipes

The humble bean can become so much more... They just need a little encouragement.

Spanish style Baked Beans with Chorizo, Eggs and Feta

Ingredients; Serves 4
  • 150g spicy chorizo sausage
  • 100mls extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 red onion, sliced
  • 4 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 2 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 80mls red wine vinegar
  • 5 tblsp tomato paste
  • 50ml water
  • 2 tins baked beans
  • good pinch of salt & pepper
  • 4 free range eggs, room temperature
  • 50g feta, crumbled
  • 2 sprigs of fresh oregano, leaves torn
  • 50mls extra virgin olive oil
  • toasted sourdough bread

Method;

Preheat oven 170C. Slice chorizo length ways in half, then slice on the angle in half moons. In a heavy based pan add chorizo with a splash of oil and fry over a medium heat until crisp. Stir in the onion, oregano, bay leaf and garlic adding a splash more oil and fry until the onions are golden brown. Add the vinegar, tomato paste, water and baked beans. Stir gently and simmer to thicken for 6 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Place the bean mixture in single serve, oven proof dishes. Make a small hole in each mixture and gently crack in an egg. Top with feta and a drizzle of oil. Season again. Bake for 8-10 minutes for medium to soft eggs. Serve with crunchy bread or toasted fingers.

Fancy Pants Beans on Toast

  • 1 tin chopped tomatoes
  • 1 red onion, finely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, crushed
  • splash of olive oil
  • pinch dried chilli flakes
  • pinch salt & pepper
  • handful basil leaves, chopped
  • 4 slices ciabatta
  • parmesan shavings, to serve
Method; Cook the onion and garlic on a medium heat in a little olive oil until the onion is soft and translucent. Add the tomatoes, chilli flakes and beans. Season well with salt and pepper and simmer until the sauce is rich and thick. About 12-16 minutes. Stir through the basil then pile onto toasted ciabatta and top with Parmesan shavings and cracked black pepper.

Spicy Bean Burger

Ingredients; Makes 6-8 Burgers
  • 1 can baked beans
  • 1 can kidney beans
  • splash of light olive oil
  • 1 small red onion, finely chopped
  • 2 medium carrots, grated
  • 2 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 1 red pepper, finely chopped
  • 1 red chilli, finely chopped
  • ½ tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 tsp tabasco sauce
  • 1 handful chopped coriander
  • Good pinch of salt & pepper
  • 175g (4 oz) rolled porridge oats
Method; Heat the oil in a non stick frying pan and add the onion, carrots and red pepper. Cook over low-medium heat for 5 minutes or until cooked through but not coloured. Add the chilli, garlic, cayenne pepper and Tabasco sauce, cook for a further minute then remove from the heat. Leave to one side to cool. Tip the kidney beans into a large bowl and roughly crush with a potato masher. Add in the baked beans (drain a little first), coriander, salt and pepper, 50g of porridge oats and cooled onion mixture. Combine ingredients. Divide into 6-8 equal portions and drop each one into a large bowl of remaining porridge oats. Flatten these slightly into burgers. Cover and chill for 30 minutes. Heat a little oil in a shallow, non-stick frying pan and cook the bean burgers in batches for 3-4 minutes on each side or until heated thorough and crispy. Drain on kitchen paper.
