January can be cruel to our self-esteem. Our hair’s turned into frazzled frizzy fluff, our skin’s on a par with Mickey Rourke’s and the ugly tree has been sneaking in to our rooms and giving us a nightly spanking. Time to learn us some new beauty tricks. The thing is, with over one million beauty tutorials on You Tube, figuring out whose advice to take can be baffling stuff. Here are my top five YouTube gurus who know how to prettify the masses and come with very good reasons we can trust them too.
The Superstar Make-up Artist; Charlotte Tilbury.
While the rest of us spend our time trying to look like Kate Moss, Charlotte Tilbury is the person Ms. Moss goes to to make her look like herself. As one of the most in demand make-up artists in the world, Tilbury commands mega-bucks for editorial shoots for the likes of Vanity Fair, Vogue and Elle. Mere months ago she set her blog and YouTube channel and these aren’t your usual product-laden videos; Tilbury doesn’t seem to promote any one brand and is just as at home using drugstore cosmetics as she is using the higher end lines. She also steers clear of baffling terms and techniques meaning we can follow what she’s doing without needing a dictionary and a suitcase of brushes.

The Professional Model; Ruth Crilly
Having worked as a model for 12 years, regularly featuring in the likes of Vogue and Elle, British hottie Ruth Crilly now vlogs her infinite beauty tips and tricks on her A Model Recommends chanel to an ever eager public. Going beyond the usual make-up tutorials (although, her’s are goooood) she has recorded videos on diet, skin care, hair care, fragrance styling and even hibernation; her general vibe is about feeling good to look good and if that means marshmallows before bed, so be it. She’s great at sniffing out budget must haves and is a big fan of once-off buys like beauty and styling gadgets. The Celebrity; Lauren Conrad.
Having stared her way into celedom through her lead role in MTV’s The Hills, Lauren Conrad has put her fame to use with a super slick beauty blog and YouTube chanel The Beauty Department. Clearly a woman who knows how to pull herself together, the few videos that are on the channel are definitely worth a watch. Full of trend led tutes, both hair and make-up, these are some of the more professional quality videos in this genre and while Lauren herself isn’t in all of them, she pops up occasionally. Unfortunately the channel hasn’t been update in months and I suspect they’re won’t be more any time soon. The Dude Who Can Look Like A Lady; Wayne Goss.
When Wayne Goss’s regular model isn’t available, he mans up and uses his own gorgeous mug to talk us through his seriously addictive tutorials, thus proving just how effective they are. A master of shading and concealing, he has a knack for explaining how to hide our hideous carbuncles and haggard eyes like a pro in the most adorably soothing way possible (wait for the wink!). His tutorial on how to contour like Kim Kardashian, though far from a natural day look, will help even the most checkbone-less of faces achieve a angles to die for. Also, big props to the boy for managing to shun cosmetic company sponsorship and avoid the lure of freebies.

The High-Powered Journalist; Elizabeth Holmes.
Working as The Wall Street Journal’s style editor gives Elizabeth Holmes access to the best of New York’s beauty brains and she’s only too happy to put them through their paces. Holmes’s beauty tutorials and tips feed on the WSJ’s channel but if you search her name you can filter all the blah blah blah news out. The former political correspondent is a far cry from the tweenage beauty poppets that are so prolific on YouTube and her no-nonsense tone is bearable first thing in the morning. She hasn’t had too many hits just yet but I suspect that might be because she forgoes the faddy celebrity looks that so often lead us down a dark, dark path. Honourable Mention; The Complete Nutter.
Though not strictly a beauty guru, Jenna Marbles’s fairly questionable sanity and tenuous grip on reality makes her the perfect person to get advice from in my book. Jenna created perhaps the single most important make-up tutorial of all (seriously NSFW) How to Trick People Into Thinking You’re Good Looking, which features nuggets like; ‘Glasses are for douchebags’, ‘I like to use colours like black, because it says, “I’m a whore”‘ and, ‘There’s no cure for ugly, but you can make yourself into a human optical illusion’. Her subject matter strays way beyond beauty tips and with over 6million subscribers, it’s only a matter of time before she gets her own TV show.
