Louis Vuitton’s The Art Of Packing; The Most Stylish YouTube Tutorial You’ve Ever Seen

Louis Vuitton Art of packing tutorial how to

Best known for their heavy-handed branding and deal-with-the-devil scale celebrity endorsements  Louis Vuitton have a long heritage of creating really beautiful luggage (for really wealthy people – a cosmetics pouch costs around €250). Having started out making transport and storage boxes for the dresses bought in the ateliers of Paris in the late 1800s, LV has grown to become one of the most formidable names in fashion; it makes up the LV part of billion-dollar luxury goods multi-conglomerate LVMH whose mammoth subsidiaries include Dior, Fendi, Givenchy and Marc Jacobs to name but a few.  Sure, the ubiquitous LV monogrammed luggage isn’t to everyone’s taste – or is to everyone’s taste as the case may be given that it’s been “borrowed” to create everything from bootleg rolling papers and condoms to tattoos and toilet seats – but with more than 200 years of experience, we can probably trust Louis Vuitton’s advice when it comes to packing.
Going beyond the great Fold or Roll debate (fold shirts and jackets, roll trousers, apparently) the company has produced a series of super stylish tutorials on how to pack like an obsessive compulsive on meth. The latest instalment of the Art of Packing series, below, features the folding of a jacket and jeans in the most hypnotically beautiful manner. Or maybe that’s just the crank talking.

My favourite is this 30-second lesson on how to fold shirts by interlacing them. Again, it probably sounds terribly dull, but much like those videos that demonstrate how to fold a tee in two seconds, it’s weirdly mesmerizing. Of course the subtle stylishness of the videos belies the fact that this is a company with millions of dollars, interns and favours at their disposal, so really, they’d want to be nailing it.

And that they do. The videos serve not only as master classes on folding and stowing stuff but as a lesson in simple yet detailed tutorial making. With literally millions of tutorials on YouTube, not to mention the tutorial-based sites like eHow and Howcast, the notion of passing your wisdom on to others online has become less and less of an art-form and more of a self-congratulatory free-for-all. I’m not dissing the brave souls that post instructionals, anyone who puts themselves out there like that is good in my book, but perhaps some heavily funded videos like these that rely on clean, stylish visuals and concise, pared down information – as opposed to glossy models giggling in slick locations (ahemVictoriasSecretahemhem) – will offer some constructive inspiration for the bedroom have-a-go-heroes out there. If nothing else, the fact that the videos are of a watchable length (they’re all blessedly under two minutes) and rely on visuals over language adds enormously to their for potential mass appeal. This 30 second video, that details how to use trousers to fold your coat, is a good example of just that.

Speaking of inspiration, I’m not sure if still fashion photographer Carl Kleiner has anything to with this video, some gentle research would suggest he didn’t, but there’s certainly a lot have his influence in the photography. So, you know, don’t feel bad for copying Louis Vuitton’s approach, they were probably riffing off Carl Kleiner. Either way, these are some solid tutorials that may not get you any closer to owning the luggage, but at least we can say our packing is Louis Vuitton. Close enough, close enough.

Tuesday Boozeday; Boozy Raspberry And Cucumber Cocktail

Suffering from that Tuesday blood-alcohol dip? Time for some booziness. After five weeks, 6 cocktails and two drowned Lego Men, I’ve come to the end of my cucumber vodka experiment. What have I learned? Three things: 1. Melon and cucumber are a really disgusting combination (I only posted 5 cocktails, the melon abomination failed the taste test and barely passed the being-able-to-hold-it-down taste); 2. Using a potato peeler on a cucumber makes the prettiest garnish ever and 3. I am going to dropkick any barman who tells me they don’t have fresh cucumber this summer.
To bid farewell to the cucumber, I made this appropriately summery slushie with an inappropriately high alcohol content. If your raspberries are fresh instead of frozen you can still make yourself a tasty drink, just add plenty of ice and don’t expect the slushie consistency. This – with the tart raspberries and quenching cucumber – will be what my mouth is going to remember of summer ’13.

Demotivational Posters; Free Arrested Development Typography Art

free typography download printable art arrested development

This is it, the final leg of the six year wait for some fresh new Arrested Development goodness. On May 26th the ass-dent in my couch will change forever with the release of 15 new episodes in one day. To celebrate, I removed my pants and pulled my arty stocking over my head and made these printable typography posters that feature the most demotivational A.D. one-liners. Because if there’s one thing that Arrested Development has taught us it’s that hard work, studious attention to detail and commitment to family will never get you as far as some slapdash lies, faux fruit and vodka.

I’ll admit narrowing down the quotes were hard. Lindsay’s “I think I maced a crane”, GOB’s “I hear the jury’s still out on science”, and every single prison guard’s “No touching!” just barely missed out to these four but I’m tempted to make a few more so there maybe be a part two. If I don’t get cancelled. So go forth and print off some uninspiring quotes or don’t, whatever. I’ve included a tiny Style It watermark on the bottoms but feel free to email me at NiamhStyleIt(at)gmail.com and I’ll send you watermark-free versions. I know, I’m a regular Freddie Wilson.

Let us know your favourite Arrested Development quotes and how you’re coping with the wait for the new season. And if you’ve decided to print some of these off we’d love to hear about it.

Happy National Pretzel Day; 8 Recipes to Celebrate Our Faithful Friend

Today is National Pretzel Day, Hurrah! And there is much to be celebrated about this versatile fella. Feeding us since the dark ages, (Word on the street is that either an Italian Monk or someone from a monastery in Southern France invented this holy dough) and taking many guises since, pretzels have been embraced by the world over. It even has Swing dance steps named after it; “The pretzel dance move”.

And let’s not forget 2002, when the courageous pretzel was awarded “Superfood” status for the time it rallied against George Bush Jr and tried to choke him. (Unfortunately, this heroic attempt failed but it will remain close to our hearts forever.)

So here’s 8 sacred recipes in honor of this valiant baked good.

Put Your Dresser In It’s Place; D.I.Y Your Drawers

Sick of that ugly dresser taunting you from the corner of the room? Are you tired of those sad drawers embarrassing you in front of your booty calls guests? Does stained, chipped paint haunt your dreams? Or do you simply wish you had the money to buy some new sh*t…? We can help. You don’t have to live like this any more. There is a way out.

Follow this guide to chest-of-drawers salvation and peace can be yours. All yours! And take it from a girl who recently super-glued her lip to her gum, all these projects are achievable.

Paint Spattered Cabinet

Channel you inner Pollock and get splattering. Or if you prefer a more practical approach, then this is the perfect opportunity to use up any old paint you have knocking about. If you had a deprived childhood and have no clue how to splatter paint, then the lads over at homeguides have a detailed tutorial.

Pantone Emerald Green

The colour of 2013., for anyone that wants to be Lady Trendy-Pants of Hipsterville. But who can blame them? This is one awesome colour that should be used more often around our abode’s. Be bold, be brave, be green! Dulux is great for bright pigments and Farrow & Ball for longevity.

Glossed Over

Rockin, party, cool! This project requires a bit of elbow grease but with an end result like this… who cares? Track down a piece of furniture you like but make sure it has some sort of character, this is about making a high-shine statement. For maximum effect spray on a couple of coats of varnish; it will be worth the effort. Plus, you’ll have really toned elbows. For a helpful link follow How to paint and varnish wood.

Mish Mash of Drawers

Call yourself what you will… artist… salvager… dumpster diver… thief… Whatever gets the job done and this one’s a dirty girl. Don your upcycling cap and create a monster masterpiece that you can call your own. The best places to search for drawers are in skips, granny’s houses and, you know, shops. I really only have one piece of advice. Go apeshit!

The Wallpaper Effect

The great thing about wallpapering a well knackered piece of furniture is that it can cover a multitude of horrors. And if you’re a bit commitment-phobic, you have the option of changing it as often as you like. Choose the paper wisely, if your Auntie likes it, don’t buy it. Get the know-how at home-dzine.

Chalk it Down

One of the more successful ways to use blackboard paint in the home (check out the link below). You can get chalkboard paint in an impressive array of colours so you’re not limited to black. This is a fun project no matter what you’re painting.

Tuesday Boozeday; Cucumber Moscow Mule

The Moscow Mule is said to have launched the craze for vodka in America so if you’re reading this from the states, now you know what to blame for that time you called your ex’s mum to tell her you love her. Anyhoo, the Moscow Mule is more than just a trouble maker, it’s about the most refreshing drink you can slurp on a hot summer’s day – which is when the best trouble is made. Use your cucumber vodka instead of the regular stuff and you’ve just elevated your drink, and probably your day, to legend-here-comes-trouble-ary.

Moss Graffiti; What You Need To Know

Moss eco graffiti how to diy tutorial

Graffiti has been elevated to new levels of hipness lately thanks to trailblazers like Jonah “*picture of a dick*-tation” Takalua and the opening credits of The Fresh Prince of Bel Air (I’m all about current references). If you happened to grow out of writing your name on other people’s stuff when you turned 10, worry not, there is a way to get in on the action. Moss graffiti gives your inner vandal a chance to stick it to the man, except prettily, legally and without being in the least bit subversive. So really, we’re just sticking it to the wall. And that’s good enough for me, I don’t want to be sent to live with my wealthy uncle in Bel Air. Wait, that doesn’t sound right. Here’s what you need to know.

IT IS EASY TO MAKE

Really, really easy. The gist of it is; mix clumps of moss with buttermilk, live yoghurt or beer, blend with some water and paint directly onto the wall. Wirral Wildlife have created this handy graphic (below, click to expand) that covers it nicely, however they do use the term “moss milkshake”, officially my least favourite flavour.
How to make moss graffiti indoors trends 2013

IT’S BETTER THAN SPRAY PAINT GRAFFITI

Not just better looking, better for the environment. Apparently spray paint isn’t that common a substance in nature. Moss, however, is.

IT CAN HELP YOU PRETEND THAT YOU’RE DEEP

Wondering how to let everyone know you’ve read Kurt Vonnegut or listen to The Smiths? So many quotes you need to share, so little wall/tattoo space left? Moss graffiti is your man. A giant stencil would definitely come in handy, as would someone else willing to do it for you. I’m getting “Literature should not disappear up it’s own asshole” mossed onto my outhouse.

YOU CAN START SLOWLY

An entire quote may seem a little excessive so how about a single word?  Certainly the execution will be easier, but good luck picking out just one word.  I’d go for “harrumph” because that’s the best one. Damn, “grow” is waaay better isn’t it?

YOU CAN MAKE PRETTY SHAPES

Not so good with words and such? Skip the calligraphy and moss up some shapes instead. Maintenance-wise you’ll probably be doing yourself a favour.

OR IMPOSSIBLY ORNATE DESIGNS

Because your moss milkshake deserves nothing less then precise, intricate and impeccably executed graffiti.

IT WILL MAKE YOUR LIVING ROOM MORE LIVING-Y

Forget your grass walls, moss graffiti is so much more stylish, striking and, em, spongy. This one was designed by Anna Garforth for the Russian Club in England and represents Mother Earth. Mine is going to represent a square and a horse because they’re the only two things I can draw.

AND IF ALL ELSE FAILS, YOU CAN MAKE MOSS GARLANDS

Maybe you’re landlord doesn’t want you decorating the walls with living organisms or you just can’t get the bloody stuff to stick. Forgetaboutit, just whip up some of these DIY moss garlands and hang them with pride. A more moderate amount of pride than if you’d managed any of the above, but pride none the less.
