Tuesday Boozeday; Summery Rose Tea Mojito Cocktail Recipe

So I've been a little slow on posts lately but naturally the cocktails keep on coming. Today's cocktail is a rose tea mojito, made all the prettier if you happen to nab some tea made from rosebuds. I'm not sure if this is going to be the last cocktail I feature made with tea as the mixer; the options are endless, it's pretty cheap and it sounds quite fancy, so why let it go? Instead of being a decent alternative to fresh juices in a pinch, which is how I saw it at the beginning of the month, I've since decided that tea is an all too overlooked cocktail hero. And yes, the yummily rosed up rum is doing some of the sweet talking here. The rose bud mojito is pretty easy to make and if you know you're way around a mojito, the main difference is that you're using rose tea to top the muddled mint and lime instead of club soda. It's worth remembering that rose is quite a delicate flavour so go easy on the lime and mint and if you can, opt for the sweeter peppermint. This would be a lovely cocktail for weddings or hen nights but I'm just going to use the prettiness as a distraction from how much I'm guzzling. Which is exactly what I look for in a drink for weddings or hen nights.

Tuesday Boozeday; Cocktails Of The Rich And The Famous

Ever have a cocktail-loving celeb call over only to discover that your drinks cabinet is about as well stocked as Lindsay Lohan's library? Me neither, but the clever Brooklynites at Pop Chart Labs have created an infographic-like poster that teams up famous people from film and literature with their favourite tipples. From The Dude's White Russian to Senior Szylak's Flaming Moe, via Sugar Kane's Manhattan (and other folks that smarter folk than I will recognise), the poster includes recipes for each one. Pop Chart Labs aren't just about the cocktails though. They've also created clever info-packed prints that focus on Martinis, alcohols and, eh, cheese. The perfect present for that special someone who's going to stab you if you give them another damn bottle opener.

Tuesday Boozeday; Chocolate Dipped Strawberry Vodka Cocktail

I include 'dipping strawberries into chocolate' both as a hobby on my C.V. and a skill. It just sends the right message. Strawberries and chocolate go together like, well, lies and C.V.s and when you booze up proceedings with the strawberry vodka we've been brewing, your reward centre goes into overdrive. I quite like creamy cocktails, particularly when it's warm out, but this Chocolate Dipped Strawberry cocktail is my new favourite. Virtuously fruity and with enough vodka to help you forget the cream, this is what the ice-cream trucks serve in heaven.

Tuesday Boozeday; Strawberry-Vodka Champagne Cocktail

Some of the best things in life are free, others are €8.99 in Aldi. A bottle of bubbles, no matter how cheap, can always be improved with the right ingredients and I discovered this weekend that strawberry vodka is definitely a right ingredient. It's as simple as it sounds, a shot of S.V. into a glass of champers garnished with a fresh strawberry - just make sure everything is chilled well first. This is perfect summer sipping.

Tuesday Boozeday; Orange and Earl Grey Gin Cooler Cocktail Recipe

Finally, a blisteringly sunny day in Ireland. Yes, we reached a balmy 17 Celsius today; read it and weep, rest of the world. Good thing today's Boozeday is a particularly summery one then. Earl grey tea has won a place in a few different cocktails thanks to it's not-so-subtle citrus and floral yumminess. The bergamot flavour goes great with orange, both in aromatherapy and cocktailtherapy, and gin is the natural kicker when it comes to cooling down. Add plenty of ice and you've got yourself the Orange and Earl Grey Gin Cooler. Enjoy, I'm off to ice my sunburn, if you know what I mean.

If there is one thing I need to remember this summer it's that herbal and fruit teas make delicigasm cocktail mixers. Forget sweating it when you run out of juice or fizz, just click the kettle on, brew your fruity tea and keep the party rocking. The best part is that herbal teas make things sound fancy, like this, the Pear Tea and Strawberry Mojito. See what I mean? This one's super easy to put together too, just make sure you give yourself enough time to let the tea cool and be gentle when muddling - a few chunks are totally acceptable in a mojito and I will roundhouse anyone who says otherwise. To kick off summer I'm going to be focussing on a different herbal tea each week this month, so stay tuned.

Tuesday Boozeday; Boozy Raspberry And Cucumber Cocktail

Suffering from that Tuesday blood-alcohol dip? Time for some booziness. After five weeks, 6 cocktails and two drowned Lego Men, I've come to the end of my cucumber vodka experiment. What have I learned? Three things: 1. Melon and cucumber are a really disgusting combination (I only posted 5 cocktails, the melon abomination failed the taste test and barely passed the being-able-to-hold-it-down taste); 2. Using a potato peeler on a cucumber makes the prettiest garnish ever and 3. I am going to dropkick any barman who tells me they don't have fresh cucumber this summer. To bid farewell to the cucumber, I made this appropriately summery slushie with an inappropriately high alcohol content. If your raspberries are fresh instead of frozen you can still make yourself a tasty drink, just add plenty of ice and don't expect the slushie consistency. This - with the tart raspberries and quenching cucumber - will be what my mouth is going to remember of summer '13.

How To Make Strawberry Infused Vodka

How to make strawberry vodka wedding summer cocktail recipe ideas diyDid you know the strawberry isn't a berry? It's actually a delicious vehicle of alcohol delivery just waiting to be mixed with booze. Infusing vodka is one of the great ways of smartening up your drinks cabinet without spending a fortune on obscure hipster tipples that you barely ever use. Decent vodka can be bought reasonably cheap and infusing even the more dubious versions can help to make it a little more smooth. It's also one of the better spirits to flavour as a rule thanks to it's subtle signature taste.

This month's Tuesday Boozedays are going to be based around DIY strawberry infused vodka, starting with one coming this afternoon. I made the vodka pictured above yesterday and already it's tasting deliciously strawberryish and blushing to a nice pink. I'm going to keep the fruit in for another few days to fully infuse but it's ready to use within 12 hours so definitely one for the impatient boozers among us. And it takes no more than five minutes from start to finish. Let the strawberry cocktails commence.

Tuesday Boozeday; Chamomile and Tequila Sour

Continuing on the the herbal tea cocktail vibe we kicked off last week, this week I've mixed calming chamomile tea with crazy-inducing tequila and a dash of lime to create a super refreshing tequila sour. You're going to have to make a simple sugar syrup for this, trust me, it's easier than it sounds and worth the little effort. As the recipe below says, mix 2 parts sugar with 1 part water and bring to the boil, stir until the sugar has dissolved (less than 5 minutes) and take off the heat. It will thicken up nicely when it cools and can be kept in the fridge for up to a month, or six months if you add some vodka. By the way, if you're not a fan of chamomile, you could replace it with another floral tea like lotus or jasmine but I suggest giving it a try in this devilish form. After all, what in life isn't improved with a kick of tequila?
